Non-Invasive Brain Stimulation

Dysfunction in brain networks seen in syndromes such as ataxia, Huntington's disease (HD), Parkinson's disease (PD) and cervical dystonia (CD) is well accepted. However, current treatment options such as oral medications, surgical interventions (e.g deep brain stimulation), and botulinum toxin therapy for CD can be limited in their ability to restore these dysfunctional brain networks, thereby symptoms are left untreated or are sub-optimally treated. In our centre, we are using a non-invasive method by stimulating brain areas in ataxia, HD, PD and CD patients to modify these brain networks and to produce beneficial outcomes (e.g. improve walking, hand-eye coordination). Our goal is to understand the acute and chronic effects of using non-invasive brain stimulation therapy for treating our patients. This treatment is also portable and cost-effective.
